Our History

The Markham Concert Band has been in continuous operation since 1978, and is one of Canada’s largest and longest-established concert bands. We are proud to provide a place for all to enjoy music, whether as performers or audience members, and we welcome you to join us or attend one of our concerts.

MCB’s History

We are a registered charity and able to issue tax receipts for donations (registration #13190 5044 RR0001) and here are a few of the highlights of our history:

1978 – A few interested musicians got together and created the Markham Concert Band, under the direction of David Craig.

1985 – Members of the Markham Concert Band were instrumental in the creation of the Markham Theatre (renamed the Flato Markham Theatre in 2012)

1989 – Doug Walker took over the baton as music director.

1993 – The Band had a major trip to Europe for a concert series.

1998 – Dr. Diana Brault became our new conductor.

2002 – Doug Manning began his term as only the fourth conductor in our history.

2004 – We recorded our first CD, “Sounds of Summer”.

2009 – We received the Gold Standard Award at the Ontario Band Association festival.

2011 – Thanks to the generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, we acquired Bandshell Dedicationan inflatable bandstand for use at our outdoor summer concerts.

2013 – We moved into the wonderful Cornell Community Centre for our rehearsals.
